My work is a passion that has old, deep roots. I guess, perhaps, while working I re-live those realizations of beauty that I found in books, books that were my companions of a solitary when I was young, stubborn and contemplative, or in the open spaces of the countryside where I often lived as a child.
I remember perfectly plants and places that appealed to me for their harmony, their perfume and their shape. For example it could be the huge oak tree or the ancient olive grove of my grandfather or the smell of the grain, unwrapping a corn on the cob, the huge, unique pots of Hoya carnosa which sat on the terrace in the morning, like a pot of porcelain flowers in summer. Or my strongest memory the present from my Dad: blue Crocus over a moss bed. So as I design a garden, I imagine myself painting a portrait and I re-live those old memories. I have been very lucky because in my line of work I have always met people whom I have learned from: my college Master, “my” gardeners, the people that allowed me to re-create their land and so many more. My work has also allowed me to explore foreign lands, I learn from countries that I visit, especially places that are so different to what I am used to: Imbersago in the winter light, the horizon of Portofino, the pines of St. Tropez and the bustling streets of London.
